Bertrand Chaffee Hospital Awarded $4.5 Million Grant

In September 2007, it was formally announced that twenty-three hospitals and seven nursing homes throughout the state of New York would be receiving $362.3 million in grant money. The funds that have been allocated are intended to assist chosen facilities in complying with the mandates of the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, also known as the Berger Commission.

The Berger Commission’s primary focus is to establish a more stable and efficient health care system for the state of New York. The monetary resources are designed to help facilities reduce excess inpatient volume in an effort to grow and support outpatient, ambulatory and community –oriented long term health care services.

Applications for the grant money were issued to 81 hospitals and nursing homes across the state and recipients were selected within a three month period. A total of $550 million will be given to assist hospitals and nursing homes in implementing the requirements of the Berger Commission. The department will be announcing additional grants for the remaining $187.7 million in available funding over the next few weeks.

Paul DeSantis, Interim CFO, spearheaded the grant preparation process for BCH with the assistance of many other hospital contributors. According to Paul, the hospital’s application included “several eligible compliance- related projects totaling $4,517,000. The majority of the awarded funds are slated to help retire secured mortgage debt and to reconfigure a portion of the facility that will help revitalize hospital services, ensuring the health and safety of the community.”
